Uppingham School: A Heritage of Innovation Since 1584
Founded in the United Kingdom in 1584 and granted its charter by Queen Elizabeth I in 1587, Uppingham School has grown from a small local grammar school into one of the UK's leading independent boarding and day schools. Uppingham is defined by its commitment to educational innovation, breadth of opportunity, and a distinguished list of alumni who have shaped fields from politics and science to the arts.
The appointment in 1853 of education pioneer Edward Thring as headmaster transformed traditions that still define the school today. Under his leadership, Uppingham introduced subjects such as science, history, and music—an exceptional step for the era. His belief in the importance of the whole child led to the creation of the first dedicated school gymnasium and the appointment of the country’s first full-time director of music.
Uppingham School is renowned for nurturing talent across every discipline. Its alumni include leading figures in public life, the arts, academia, and industry, each shaped by the school’s ethos of aspiration, creativity, and service.
Uppingham Hung Yen will remain true to these founding values while evolving with modern needs and a commitment to well-rounded, forward-thinking education. Our campus opening in August 2026 follows the 2024 opening of Uppingham Cairo, which also proudly carries Uppingham’s heritage, spirit, and educational excellence.
